How Much Do Online ESL Teachers Make?
Probably one of the most important considerations before deciding to become an online ESL is whether it is really possible to make money out of it and how much online ESL teachers/tutors make.
The rates that online ESL companies offer vary but range from Php80-Php290 an hour. Back in the day when online ESL was just kicking off, the starting rate at my former company was Php130/hour. After a certain number of lesson hours, it went up to Php140 before it hit the ceiling at Php150.
Working at 8 hours a day, 22 days a month (if you want to have some rest on the weekends) at that rate will give you a gross of Php 26,400 and a net of Php 23,760 after a 10% tax deduction. Is that good enough yet?
Keep in mind that this is a homebased job and therefore, you won’t have to waste you precious time and money on commuting to a workplace. Having said that, wouldn’t that give you more time to spend on teaching in the comfort of your home and therefore, earn more?
The potential income mentioned above is based on the average rate ESL companies offer so of course, the rate can be higher. The number of hours you want to teach is also entirely up to you. Some teachers/tutors teach 10-13 hours a day! Before you even think that’s a tough one, think about how much time you spend on your commute going to and coming from work, not to mention your prep time!
The next question to ask is, “Is the number of students who book your lesson slots guaranteed?” The answer is no but if you are good, you will never run out of students. (Tips on how to gain loyal students.)
I see a lot of teachers/tutors complaining on social media groups about not getting enough students and blame the ESL companies for it. This is something that’s truly difficult for me to understand. I believe that if you’re really serious about being a good ESL teacher, you put some effort into learning more about this job, and you value your students, they will keep coming back to your page and book your lessons.
Complaints about the rates ESL companies offer are also ubiquitous. Understandably so, because truly, it can be better. But that is something you can actually change like I did. But you’ve got to gain enough experience, confidence, and loyal students who are ready to go with you. And when you think you’re ready, go out, build your own online teaching platform and be truly the boss of your own. Till then, cheers to teaching at ESL companies!
